Unrequited Love

EnergyMy dearest Citrus Energy Yellow Vitamin Water,

Why must you hurt me so? I have been the truest of patrons, the biggest of fans. Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? My love for you was deeper than my love for any other cleverly marketed, beautifully packaged sports beverage; truer than the truest of convenience store shoppers.

To sum it up, you had me at hello.

Until I googled guarana, one of your main ingredients, and found that this herb (whose claim to fame is its high caffeine content and is, therefore, used in many energy drinks) has been shown to “decrease platelet aggregation.”

And, as an ITP patient, this is a fact that I simply cannot ignore. My platelets are something that I am not willing to gamble with, so I’m going to have to break it off, Citrus.  I know you’ll find someone else, with a healthy platelet count, who is more capable of being the mate that you deserve.

Thanks for the memories,

Me

When you consider that, starting this past summer, I used to average one of these drinks a day, these findings are a little alarming. But who knows if this really contributed to my ITP…from what I’ve learned about this disorder, certain supposed catalysts for some patients in some cases can have no effect on others. Each case seems to be different and dependent upon countless factors. However, it is something to be aware of…and avoid.

And, don’t worry about me. I’ve been cheating on Citrus Energy Yellow Vitamin Water with Minute Maid Pomegranate Lemonade for a few months now. I’ll be fine. ;)
